In the city of David, Colorado, in the United States, there is a shelter for abandoned animals.
As part of the shelter's activities, every few years (or after the previous mayor retires) the city's residents mobilize to elect a mayor from among the abandoned animals. However, the right to vote involves a fee of one dollar - which will be donated to the shelter.
The mayor for the past three years has been a ginger cat named Walter, who won an overwhelming majority in the previous election and served in his high office for three years.
Recently, the cat, or more precisely the parliament that includes the shelter's directors, decided that he had reached the end of his political career, after being observed sleeping for long hours.
As Prime Minister Sharon once said: "Being Prime Minister of Israel is the most difficult and demanding job in the world, but when I open the door to resign, I discover the number of people who are turning a blind eye to the position, and decide that maybe it's worth staying put after all" - no fewer than 11 candidates are also running for Walter's seat.
CNN, which reported the story, reports that the list of contestants includes the Rebbe, a 35-year-old donkey – making him the oldest contestant, a wolf named Kenny, a cat named Buster, and a hedgehog named Blackberry.
In addition, several dogs and one horse are competing.
The shelter says they hope to reach an amount no less than last time – $10,000.
