Brigadier General Guy Marchisano was promoted to the rank of major general and took over as the Prime Minister's military secretary, replacing Major General Roman Goffman, who served in the position for the past two years and took over as head of the Mossad last week.
The exchange ceremony was held yesterday (Tuesday) in Kirya, in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, and members of the General Staff Forum, commanders, and families.
Netanyahu: ""The military secretary is a liaison between the prime minister, the IDF, and the security agencies. This is necessary at all times, but it is certainly necessary in times of war. The task is huge, and Roman, you did it in a huge way. I want to thank you for bringing with you a deep commitment to managing the system in a proactive, determined, and cunning manner, and it embraced all the agencies. You stepped out of the box, and you took us out of the box many times.
""I owe you a very great debt, because you helped me in these difficult days in an extraordinary way. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart on behalf of the people of Israel for your contribution to Israel's security and Israel's victory.".
""Guy, I pass the weight on to these shoulder straps that you have now received. You have also dedicated your life to Israel's security. You combine excellent knowledge of both field work and headquarters work in exactly the places where we are needed. We are working not only on continuing our efforts to crush our enemies, and change our status from end to end, as has already happened. We will use these achievements to build new opportunities.
""This all comes down to one way or another in the role of the Prime Minister's military secretary. I know you are experienced in this and you are already well versed in this material, and I know you will continue to do so well. I trust you to help me, the IDF, the Shin Bet, the Mossad, and the other security branches, and I am sure that we will work together for the benefit of Israel's security.".
Roman Goffman: ""Today I complete two years as the Prime Minister's Military Secretary and thirty-one years of combat service in the IDF. I am leaving the position at a defining moment and continuing to serve the Israeli nation with responsibility, commitment, and accountability for an Israel that will 'neither lie nor comfort.'"
""From here, I continue on to the next mission. This time, without the olive uniform, but with another great thing I learned: On that Simchat Torah morning, no one could have imagined the difficulties that lay ahead of us - nor the magnitude of the change that we would bring with our own hands. Despite the achievements, there are goals that have not yet been achieved. We are not finished yet - but the State of Israel has something to be proud of.
""Prime Minister - Thank you for the trust, for two years by your side during a fateful period, for entrusting me with the task of ensuring the security of the state and the Jewish people. Chief of Staff - Thank you for years of command, support and companionship. Great appreciation for the way you lead the IDF.".
""I want to congratulate the successors of our Marquis! I am very happy that you are the one who is taking on this mission. Make sure that you are excited every time you go to Jerusalem, and you will know the rest.".
Champion Guy Marchisano: ""Your Excellencies, as I stand here today wearing the rank of Major General, my heart is filled with immense pride for the privilege of serving in an army that is unique in the entire world. This is an army in which commanders are not born into a position, but grow from within the ranks. An army in which a boy or girl enlists with the "bag of values" they brought from home - and can, thanks to perseverance, determination and talent, climb all the way up, to the honorable rank of Major General. This social mobility is the secret of the IDF's strength as the people's army.
""I am reaching this intersection in direct succession, and without stopping for a moment, from running the marathon of recent years. For the past three years, I have been privileged to serve as the military secretary to the Minister of Defense, during a unique period in which we are fighting a long, difficult and intense war.
""I am excited and grateful for the privilege of becoming a general today in the IDF General Staff Forum. This is a high-quality, impressive and extraordinary group of commanders led by the Chief of the General Staff and carrying on its shoulders the most complex, demanding and sacred mission there is - security for the people of Israel. Joining this group, especially in this historic period, in the midst of a war in which we are fighting for our homeland, is an even more special honor. I enter the General Staff Forum with reverence, ready to contribute my part within the whole.".
""I do not come to the General Staff table and the Prime Minister's office alone. The knowledge that I will bring to the most sensitive discussion rooms was built from countless lessons I learned throughout my years of service in the IDF. I learned from the commanders who educated me from my rookie years to the present, from the colleagues who challenged me, from the Minister of Defense, next to whom I served, and especially from the commanders and fighters in the field - who are, in effect, my generals and my advisors.".
""I pledge to be a loyal, stable and professional bridge. To bring the sharp operational truth from the command room in the headquarters to the decision-making table in Jerusalem.".
