Rabbi Shlomo Dychovsky announced the end of his position - and the race for the position of Director General of the Rabbinical Courts is gaining momentumAttorney Batya Kahane Dror, CEO of the organization "Mavoi Satom," a religious feminist organization that assists women who are denied a get and agunot within the framework of the rabbinical courts, submitted her candidacy for the position of director of the rabbinical courts last night.
In her letter, sent to Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Kahane Dror writes that her appointment may prove to be extremely effective, as it will constitute "a correction of the ongoing injustice and discrimination against women in the rabbinical courts, due to the exclusion of women from judicial and senior management positions, and due to the fact that women are the main victims in the courts.".
However, Kahane Dror is now claiming that the minister may be interested in promoting her candidacy, as she wants to be portrayed as someone who cares about advancing the status of women, but on the other hand, there is enormous pressure on her to appoint Rabbi Shimon Yaakovi, who is considered an ultra-Orthodox candidate.
The Haredim10 reporter learned that the Ministry of Justice tried to hint to her that she should withdraw her candidacy, due to the opposition of the chief rabbis.
The candidate demands the establishment of a search committee that will provide equal opportunity for women to submit their candidacies, and so that there is no "appointment in the dark," as she defines it.
A response from the Ministry of Justice has not yet been received.
