The frightening image presented is not science fiction: this is exactly what the encounter between a comet and Earth, or more precisely between the comet and the city of Los Angeles in the United States, would look like if it deviated from its orbit.
About two weeks ago, after about twenty-five years of attempts to land on a comet, humanity took another historic step forward: the Philae lander landed on Comet 67P - Churyumov-Gerasimenko, becoming the first man-made object to land on a comet.
''Philae' was released from the Rosetta probe, moved slowly towards the comet, and managed to land on it safely, sending images back to Earth.

According to the data provided, the comet has an orbital period of 6.44 years. Its rotation period is around 12.4 hours, and it travels a distance of 135,000 kilometers per hour.
