Towards a frontal confrontation with the IDF? Twelve prominent Heder yeshivot leaders issued a joint statement declaring that they would prohibit their students from enlisting in the Armored Corps.
The step was taken following the IDF's decision to promote a pilot for integrating female fighters into tanks - which is expected to launch in the November recruitment.
In their letter, the rabbis expressed deep pain and anger over what they defined as a weak response by the State of Israel and the IDF, which did not oppose the High Court of Justice's decision to require the integration of female fighters into armored vehicles.
The rabbis emphasized that the "sanctity of the camp" is the basis for the spirit of the IDF and for success in eradicating the enemy on the battlefield, and made it clear that putting female soldiers in tanks along with soldiers spiritually and practically harms operational capability.
According to them, serving in the armored forces in this format is prohibited according to Jewish law, and therefore they instruct their students not to enlist in the force.
The rabbis clarified that the students will continue to enlist in other combat units and emphasized that the IDF must find solutions and combat frameworks that are appropriate to the spirit of Halacha for yeshiva students.
The letter was signed by Rabbi David Pendel, head of the Sderot Yeshiva, Rabbis Hagai Lundin and Tal Shaulian, heads of the Holon Yeshiva, Rabbis Elyakim Levanon and Shahar Imber of the Alon Moreh Yeshiva, Rabbi Baruch Vider, head of the Western Wall Yeshiva, Rabbi Yehoshua Van Dijk, head of the Itamar Yeshiva, Rabbi Noam Waldman, head of the Nir Yeshiva, Rabbi Yossi Rodriguez, head of the Eilat Yeshiva, Rabbi Eliyahu Rahamim Zini, head of the Or Yeshua Yeshiva, and Rabbi Yaakov Yedid, head of the Hesder Yeshiva in Karmiel.
