The Rishon LeZion, Rabbi David Yosef, spoke tonight (Saturday night) in his weekly shiur with an emotional appeal to the public in Israel and the Diaspora, and called on the Prime Minister and the President of the State to join the declaration of the President of the United States, Donald Trump - to observe the next Shabbat.
This week, the White House issued an official proclamation for Jewish American Heritage Month 2026 and America's 250th anniversary, in which President Trump expressed deep appreciation for the Jewish religion and called on citizens to honor the Sabbath and take time out for rest.
In his remarks, the Rishon LeZion linked the declaration to the upcoming Sabbath – the Sabbath of Parashat Bamidbar, known as the "Bridal Shabbat" because it is the Sabbath that prepares for the holiday of the Giving of the Torah, and mentioned the statement of the Sages according to which "if the people of Israel keep two Sabbaths, they will immediately be redeemed.".
Rabbi Yosef: "First of all, I expect and I call on the President of the State and the Prime Minister of the Jewish State to join the call of the President of the United States, at least here in the Land of Israel.".
He added: "How important it is that we all unite around the holy Sabbath. If a non-Jew so respects our religion and calls on non-Jews to rest on the Sabbath, how much more so are we Jews who have the Torah, we have our tradition, and we have the precious gift called the holy Sabbath - how important it is that everyone unites around observing the Sabbath, and thanks to this we will soon attain complete redemption.".
