Israel Dranger, who served as chief of staff to Bnei Brak Mayor Hanoch Seibert, is leaving his position in the municipality in favor of a new role: political leader of the 'central faction' of Gur Hasidism, alongside Moti Babchik.
The appointment was announced during a meeting of the top brass of the "central faction," led by the Rebbe's son, Rabbi Nehemiah Alter.
The central faction announced the appointment this evening: "Agudat Yisrael Party Chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf and Agudat Yisrael Secretary General Hanoch Seibert, in coordination with Agudat Yisrael Chairman Rabbi Yosef Kupferberg, decided to appoint Israel Dranger to coordinate all political issues in the central faction.".
""Within the framework of his role, Dranger, on behalf of the central faction, will coordinate the municipal field with mayors, deputies and council members, along with handling national issues in cooperation with party chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf and his office staff.".
Sources in the AGUI said this evening: "This is an appointment that 'goes over the head' of Seibert, who remains with the title of Secretary General.".
As reported in Haredim 10, about two weeks ago, Attorney Shlomo Elbaum, a member of the Bnei Brak City Council from the 'Goodness of the City' faction, claimed that following a "severe crisis of trust" between Mayor Hanoch Seibert and the Rebbe of Gur, a 'call committee' of five members was appointed whose job it was to oversee the city of Torah and Hasidism.
In a letter that Elbaum sent as a request to the mayor of Bnei Brak, he wrote: "From information that has reached me, it appears that a severe crisis of trust has arisen between the mayor, Mr. Hanoch Seibert, and his patron, the Rebbe of Gur. Following this crisis of trust, a 'call committee' was appointed on behalf of the Rebbe of Gur, whose job is to supervise the mayor, his conduct, and the manner in which he makes decisions.".
