Former Minister Ayelet Shaked addressed the conscription law today (Sunday) at the Jerusalem Conference, saying that the Haredi public needs to understand that conscription is necessary at this time and cooperate with the move.
First thing at the polls: What will you do if there is an alarm when you vote?
Shaked stated: "We are not succeeding in recruiting the Haredim through dialogue. It simply does not work. I spoke with several leaders of the Haredi public and suggested that they establish Seder yeshivas. Because they also know that a significant portion of the young men in yeshivas should not be there. Unfortunately, they responded in the negative. This is something the state must stand by. It cannot be that in times of war, the Haredim will not serve.".
According to her, "There must be a change in the situation. All these years we have been talking about dialogue, years have passed since we enacted the conscription law in 2014, and nothing has happened.".
She referred to the way the war was being conducted: "I think the IDF is being conducted exceptionally well. Military delegations from around the world come here. I visited Tel Hashomer and saw how the soldiers are willing to give their lives. I think Sinwar misjudged the strength of the Jewish people - and we will defeat them.".
Shaked added: "October 7th is of course a colossal failure of all systems. We failed in assessment, deterrence and defense. We saw that the right-wing government completely humiliated us in the end, and truly October 7th is the blackest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Then the IDF and the political echelon came to their senses, there is a campaign that is a good campaign. Are you asking if it could have been done differently? Yes. I think the transfer of fuel and humanitarian aid is the mother of all sins.".
In her opinion, the opportunity should be taken advantage of, and UNRWA should be addressed as well: "There is a historic opportunity here for the Israeli government to close this organization once and for all, both because it supports terrorism and because it perpetuates the refugees. If this government does not take advantage of this, it would be a great shame.".
