Days of hysterical terror have passed over residents of the town of San Clemente, California, when they discovered dolls that clearly resembled their daughters behind their doors, reports the Sky News website.
The townspeople, who had gone out to work at dawn, were horrified to discover dolls on the doorstep, and at a glance they realized that they were holding plastic figures that looked suspiciously like their daughters. The girls were all 10 years old.
The neighbors, about ten families, quickly contacted the police, who believed they were dealing with a dangerous child abductor who was seeking to make his mark using human-like dolls.
Police officers began to create a crime script or find a criminological pattern linking the ten girls who attended different schools.
The police also tried to check whether the dolls were mass-produced or were custom-made. Despite their attempts, the police were unable to find a common thread and asked the families to be vigilant.
In the meantime, heavy surveillance was placed on the houses, and not long after, the 'mystery' was solved.
A woman working at the local church had a large collection of dolls in her home that she wanted to donate to the children of the town. Since she knew the residents, she matched the dolls to the children based on their physical appearance.
""It's a shame she didn't leave a note next to the dolls," said one of the mothers. "We've had days of anxiety and fear about our little girls.".
