Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to appoint a new chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee today.

Netanyahu committed to the High Court of Justice to appoint a new chairman by the end of March. This follows a petition filed with the High Court by the Chairman of the Opposition MK Yitzhak Herzog, the Chairman of the Labor Party MK Eitan Cabel, and MK Nachman Shai.

According to estimates, the prime minister will appoint MK Tzachi Hanegbi, his preferred candidate, to the position, and he will later be replaced by MK Ofer Shelah of Yesh Atid, the preferred candidate of Finance Minister Yair Lapid. The dispute between Netanyahu and the Yesh Atid chairman over who will be awarded the position of chairman of the prestigious committee has so far prevented the position from being filled, which has been vacant since MK Avigdor Lieberman was appointed Foreign Minister.
