Singer Avi Ben Israel will dress up as Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l on Purim this year. However, Ben Israel will not use a purchased costume: he will pull out the precious turban that is well-kept in his closet - an original turban that the Gra"r zt"l wore in his lifetime - and walk around with it at the various holiday events.
""It's a real treasure," Ben-Israel told journalist Yehuda Schlesinger of Israel Hayom. "They offered to buy it from me for two hundred thousand shekels and I refused. There's simply no chance. I loved and still love Rabbi Ovadia endlessly, and this souvenir will stay with me forever.".
Where did he get the treasure?
Ben Israel: "The rabbi wore the turban a few times, but it was too small for him. The seller called me - and without thinking twice, I ran and bought it for several thousand shekels.".
He said, "Ever since I can remember, I have been chasing after Maran. I have been to his house and even had the privilege of meeting him. Wearing an object that belonged to him is a great privilege. There is holiness in this object, like Baba Sali's robe, it is drawing strength from the righteous one.".
