Italy has officially announced that it is opening an investigation against National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, following the recording of his meeting with the participants of the flotilla to Gaza.
Minister Ben Gvir said in response: "The land of the boot has become the land of the flip-flop. Israel is not a child of a bunch of lying terrorist supporters who invent plots and lies against our fighters. I will not shy away from any kind of investigation and will continue to stand proudly alongside our fighters.".
Last Friday, Ireland banned Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from entering its territory. Ireland is the ninth country to ban Ben-Gvir and Smotrich from entering its territory - after Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Spain.
The minister caused an international uproar when he conducted an operational tour of the Ashdod port, along with prison guards from the Israel Prison Service, police forces, and the IDF, with the aim of closely monitoring the absorption and interrogation of pro-Palestinian activists who were taken off the ships of the Turkish flotilla to Gaza in May.
During the minister's tour of the detention complex, drama ensued when one of the flotilla participants shouted at him: "Free Palestine.".
The prison guards who accompanied the minister immediately took control of her and removed her from the scene.
At the same time, the security forces played the anthem "Hatikva" at high volume in the background.
Minister Ben Gvir chose to document the events, directly addressing the flotilla's detainees while waving the Israeli flag in front of them, and telling the cameras: "The camp is over, whoever acts against the State of Israel will find a resolute state, the people of Israel are alive.".
The documentation, which was quickly distributed in the world's media, led to the outrage of Italy and other countries.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni reacted sharply and even summoned the Israeli ambassador in Rome to reprimand him. .
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu then harshly criticized the minister. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar also launched an unprecedented attack against Ben-Gvir following the footage he released from the scene, accusing him of directly harming the national interests of the State of Israel.
