The Bnei Brak City Council approved on Sunday, in a precedent-setting decision, to ban the operation of automatic drink and food machines throughout the city after 11:00 PM - claiming that this is a "spiritual danger.".

With the exception of Yaakov Wider, a member of the city council, who strongly opposed the proposal, refused to vote and demanded that the legal advisor recommend removing the proposal from the agenda on the grounds that it was illegal, all council members supported the unusual proposal, which does not exist in any city in Israel.

During the discussion, Wieder confronted Mayor Hanoch Seibert: "The activists want to turn the residents of Bnei Brak into their subjects like in North Korea - educated and locked up.".

After the decision was approved, Vider responded: "In a city that is not North Korea - the role of a municipality is to serve the public, not educate it. Bnei Brak has one of the richest municipalities in Israel that provides some of the worst services - and instead of fixing this, the activists repeatedly take advantage of the residents.

""Is there noise? Enforce the existing law and close the nuisance. But how dare disconnected businessmen, who drive expensive jeeps, fly and dine at fancy restaurants in Israel and abroad, deny a poor man or woman, who doesn't have a car and therefore can't leave the city at night, the simple right to indulge in an evening snack or a can after a hard day? What's your name?""
