Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office reacted sharply this evening (Thursday) to the remarks of Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, describing his call for the destruction of Israel as "outrageous.".
The bureau's statement said: "The call by the Pakistani Defense Minister for the destruction of Israel is outrageous. This is not the kind of statement that can be accepted from any government, and certainly not from a country that claims to be a neutral mediator for peace.".
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar also responded: "Israel views with great severity these blatant anti-Semitic blood libels from a government that claims to 'mediate for peace.' Calling the Jewish state a 'cancer' is in fact calling for its destruction. Israel will defend itself against terrorists who swear to destroy it.".
The Pakistani Defense Minister said earlier today: "Israel is evil and a curse on humanity, and while peace talks are taking place in Islamabad, genocide is being carried out in Lebanon. Innocent civilians are being killed by Israel - first in Gaza, then in Iran and now in Lebanon.".
He added: "I pray that people who created this cancerous state on Palestinian land, to get rid of European Jews, will burn in hell.".
The remarks were made at a time when Pakistan is involved in mediation attempts between the United States and Iran.
