Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced today (Wednesday) that a plan to increase the speed limit on additional intercity roads from 90 to 110 km/h will be presented in the coming days.

The plan was formulated in recent months by the National Road Safety Authority, in cooperation with the Traffic Police.

The Ministry of Transportation presents the move as an adaptation to the reality in which many drivers are already driving faster than the speed limit on certain roads.

The plan is designed to adjust the speed limit on selected roads after examining safety aspects, traffic accident data, and expansion work carried out in the field.

According to estimates, among the roads where the speed increase will be tested are Highway 1 between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and Highway 90 in the Arava in sections that were expanded to two lanes in each direction.

We will also examine Highway 431, where the speed may increase in some sections from 70 to 90 km/h.

The new move is also expected to include speed adjustments at intersections and various sections where the road infrastructure allows it.

After the implementation of the plan and the increase in the speed limit, the police are expected to increase enforcement actions against drivers who exceed the new speed limit that will be set on the roads.

Attorney Moti Orange, Deputy Chairman of the Traffic Bureau: "Congratulations to Minister Miri Regev for the initiative to increase the speed on various roads in the country from 90 km/h to 110. In the modern era, and with the improvement of vehicles and the repair of roads, there is indeed a place to provide a service for the benefit of the driver to increase the speed, and not to use it as a money laundering system for the state treasury at the expense of the citizen driver.".

""It is also appropriate for the minister to give approval to increase the speed on Begin Road in Jerusalem, which serves as a main thoroughfare, and to increase the speed from 70 km/h to 90 km/h, and not for traffic cameras to be used as a money-making machine. There is no justification for Begin Road with 3 lanes in each direction, which does not pass directly in front of houses, to be used as a road that is near houses and institutions - and the speed limit is 50 km/h with a permitted deviation of 55, and there is no enforcement up to 60.".
