Attorney Gali Baharav-Miara asked the High Court of Justice tonight (Friday night) to issue an interim order that would stop what is a 'conscription bypass route' for yeshiva students through civilian national service.

According to a report in Kan News, in response to a petition by Free Israel that was submitted to the court, it was stated that the National Service Law should not be extended.

According to Baharav-Miara, the proposed arrangement is an alternative path to military service for the population subject to conscription, open only to ultra-Orthodox Jews - and constitutes an extremely serious violation of equality, at a time when the IDF needs manpower.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the political-security cabinet meeting held yesterday that after Passover, the coalition will advance the conscription law as well as the law extending regular service in the IDF.

This is contrary to the position of legal advice.

Government Secretary Yossi Fox responded to Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who warned at the meeting about the collapse of the IDF due to the manpower crisis, and said: "Immediately after the holiday I will tell the legal advisor that there is no such thing. We are bringing the two things together: the draft law and the extension of service - that is what we decided, and she does not determine.".
