Jaffa police detectives arrested an illegal resident, a resident of Hebron, last night (Thursday), who posed as a courier for the 'Volt' company and ripped off and stole dozens of mezuzahs from many buildings in the Jaffa and Bat Yam areas.

The arrest was made after a large number of reports were recently received about a serious and ugly phenomenon - the tearing and theft of dozens of mezuzahs from many buildings in Jaffa and the city of Bat Yam.

Following the complaints, Jaffa police officers launched an undercover investigation, incorporating advanced technological means, with the aim of locating those involved in the serious acts.

As the investigation progressed and evidence was collected, combined with intelligence activity, the suspect was identified who posed as a 'Volt' courier and, according to suspicion, carried out the tearing off and stealing of the mezuzahs from the residential buildings.

Last night, the suspect was observed by detectives deployed in a prolonged ambush, arriving at an abandoned building in Jaffa, riding a bicycle, and meeting up with another person.

At this point, the detectives arrested the suspects and during the search seized evidence that links the main suspect to the crimes attributed to him.

The main suspect and another suspect, illegal residents from Hebron, in their 20s, were transferred for questioning to the Investigations Department of the Jaffa Police.

Depending on the development of the investigation, a decision will be made to bring the suspects to a detention extension hearing at the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court.
