Yaakov Wider, a member of the Bnei Brak City Council, submitted a motion today (Monday) demanding that Bnei Brak be recognized as a city whose residents are entitled to carry personal weapons.

Wieder noted in his explanatory remarks: "Given the security reality in Israel, it has been proven time and time again that weapons in the hands of law-abiding citizens save lives and enable immediate response until the arrival of security forces." He said, "This was recently highlighted again in the severe terrorist incident in Australia, in which a citizen was the first to try to neutralize the terrorist.".

Wider emphasized that Bnei Brak is the most densely populated city in Israel, where on Saturdays and holidays the streets are packed with children, women, and the elderly, while at the same time residents have no means of communication available and given the complete absence of a municipal security system in the city - the arrival of security forces in the event of a terrorist attack could be dangerously delayed.

The proposal noted that many cities and towns have recently been recognized as eligible to bear arms, but Bnei Brak, where the need is more urgent, was left off the list.

Wieder added that over a hundred residents of the city have already expressed a desire to legally carry weapons, as long as eligibility is possible.

According to Wieder, a unanimous official appeal by the City Council to the Ministry of National Security and the Israel Police would allow for a rapid and up-to-date security situation assessment, which could confirm the demand.

Wieder called on the mayor and members of the city council to "rise above narrow and extraneous political considerations and support a move that could save lives - the highest value in Judaism.".

The proposal will be debated and voted on by the Bnei Brak City Council.
