Last night, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.

The terrorist attack occurred shortly before a local rock band was scheduled to perform at the theater. The terrorists stormed the venue, fired in all directions, and then set the theater on fire.

A fire broke out on the roof of the theater, which rescue forces extinguished over several hours.

In a speech he gave at noon following the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that "the terrorists tried to escape to Ukraine," compared them to Nazis - and promised: "All those responsible will be punished.".

White House spokesman John Kirby said last night that "according to all indications, there is no Ukrainian involvement in the attack.".

Across Russia, hundreds of entertainment shows and events have been canceled.

President of the State Isaac Herzog said: "I strongly condemn the barbaric terrorist attack near Moscow yesterday that claimed many victims. I have now spoken with the Russian ambassador and conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of Israel and on behalf of the families, the Russian people and their leadership for the terrible loss of life and I wished a speedy recovery to those injured in body and mind.

""I emphasized that terrorism of any kind, and especially jihadist terrorism, operates indiscriminately against beliefs, peoples, and religions; sowing terror and destruction. This is a huge international challenge and the countries of the world must stand together against it resolutely and fight it with a strong hand.".
