The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem apologizes for the statement by Deputy Minister for Regional Cooperation, Ayoub Kara, that the earthquake that struck Italy this week was caused by a UNESCO decision regarding the holy sites in Jerusalem.
The Foreign Ministry statement said that the words were inappropriate and it would have been better if they had not been said at all.
""We condemn Deputy Minister Kara's words. They are inappropriate and it would have been better if they had not been said at all.".
""As stated, the Deputy Minister apologizes for the words and we join in this apology. The words do not reflect the strength of the relations between Israel and Italy, the peoples and governments alike.".
The announcement also stated that the Prime Minister will hold a clarification conversation with the Deputy Minister as soon as possible.
Dozens of people were injured in the earthquake that struck central Italy on Wednesday.
