A senior coalition official sharply attacked Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri this morning (Monday) for his unusual absence from the limited cabinet meeting that took place last night - this against the backdrop of the crisis surrounding the conscription law and Deri's threats to resign from the government.
""This is an irresponsible man who is using the holy of holies of state security for political purposes, and not for the first time," the senior official said.
According to a report by Moti Castel on Channel 14, the senior official compared Deri's behavior to his abstention from voting on the Oslo Accords: "Precisely now, when a hostage deal is taking shape that he claimed to support - he is choosing to abstain, just like in Oslo.".
Those close to Deri responded: "Netanyahu knows very well why he didn't come.".
Last night, Kan News reported that Deri conveyed a message to Shas officials that the party was preparing to withdraw from the government "within a few days.".
According to the report, Deri told his people that "if United Torah Judaism withdraws from the government this week, Shas is expected to join the move a few days later, but in the first stage the two parties will not work to dissolve the Knesset, but will make an additional effort to lead to the approval of the external recruitment law.".
He added that "if this does not happen, at the beginning of the next session the factions will lead to the dissolution of the Knesset.".
