High Court appoints Shin Bet chief: The panel of judges in the Supreme Court hearing the petitions for and against the appointment of David Zini as the next head of the Shin Bet - Yitzhak Amit, Alex Stein and Gila Kanfei Steinitz - decided to grant another week for negotiations between Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and the government, in an attempt to reach agreements between them.
The judges' decision stated:
""At the end of the discussion, at the request of the Cabinet Secretary, a discussion was held in his presence and in the presence of the attorney general's representative.".
""At their request, we have decided to grant additional time for contacts between the Secretary of the Government and the Legal Counsel to the Government. We hope that an agreed solution will be found, which will make it unnecessary to decide on these petitions. Another hearing in the presence of the Secretary of the Government and the Legal Counsel to the Government will be scheduled for July 6, 2025.".
Earlier, during the hearing, an unusual confrontation occurred between Judge Yitzhak Amit and two of the judges on the panel - Alex Stein and Gila Kanfei Steinitz, who opposed his positions.
Senior political commentator Amit Segal criticized Judge Amit: "It warms the heart to see the High Court seeking compromises. When Amit had the automatic majority in the previous composition, he insisted on a ruling that ignited the entire issue in the Ronen Bar matter, even though the petition was unnecessary.".
""Now, when he is in the minority in the composition, the gates of reconciliation have opened.".
