At the end of Operation 'Am Kalavi': Under the direction of Minister of Transportation Miri Regev, the Ministry of Transportation made an urgent appeal to the Treasury, stating that public transportation drivers operated emergency lines in threatened areas, transported soldiers, and evacuated citizens returning from abroad - at personal risk and with extraordinary commitment.
However, due to the reduction of services in accordance with Home Front Command guidelines, the drivers' wages were hit sharply - some lost up to 35% of their income.
The current compensation plan (“the unpaid leave plan”) does not provide a solution for these drivers, as most of them were not put on unpaid leave but continued their essential work on a limited scale.
In accordance with the directive of the Minister of Transportation, the Director General of the Ministry of Transportation, Moshe Ben-Zaken, contacted the Ministry of Finance with a request to include public transportation drivers in the compensation plan, or alternatively to formulate a dedicated solution for them.
He said, "While they were dividing the homeland, they carried the homeland. They must not be left behind now.".
