According to a report today (Friday) in the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, the new government also expressed a willingness to discover the whereabouts of the remains of the martyrs who disappeared in Syria during the First Lebanon War.
Sources told the newspaper that the recent meetings held in the Emirates between officials from the new Syrian government and senior American and Israeli officials revolved around an informal understanding that Syria would take steps to ease tensions with Israel, in exchange for "a series of political enticements" presented by the American side.
According to the same sources, the Americans made it clear that if Damascus succeeds in proving its control over the territory and takes steps that are seen as meaningful, including settling the issue of the missing, it could receive renewed international recognition and perhaps even steps to ease sanctions.
