The IDF reported that the soldier and the female fighters were evacuated to receive medical treatment at the hospital and their families were notified.

According to Doron Kadosh, the military correspondent for the Israeli military, an initial investigation into the anti-tank and explosive device incident in the northern Gaza Strip, in which an IDF reconnaissance plane was shot down and five other soldiers were injured, reveals:

  1. The incident began at 12:58 p.m. today, when terrorists fired an RPG missile at an unarmored military vehicle, which was traveling on an administrative route ("internal" route, rear) in the "HaSivon neighborhood" area in Beit Hanun - opposite Nir Am and Mefalsim, in the buffer zone.
  2. As a result of the RPG fire, three combat reconnaissance fighters were seriously injured.
  3. According to the initial investigation, the terrorists emerged from a tunnel that was treated over the past week by IDF forces. The tunnel is located within the buffer zone, and extends from a military post in the buffer zone to the border with Israel - and was treated as part of the cleaning and purification operations that the IDF is carrying out in the buffer zone near the fence. Yesterday, IDF forces placed charges in that tunnel to blow it up, and this is apparently what prompted the terrorists to come out and try to harm our forces.
  4. Shortly after the RPG fire, a rescue force arrived under the command of the commander of the Northern Brigade in the Gaza Division, Col. A. The rescue force included the brigade commander's special forces and a reconnaissance force.
  5. At 1:25 PM, about half an hour after the first RPG incident - a powerful charge was activated on the scouts' vehicle. As a result of the charge's explosion, one scout fell and two others were seriously injured. The brigade commander was not harmed.
  6. Several Air Force helicopters were scrambled during the incident to evacuate the wounded to several hospitals. In total, one soldier was killed and five others were seriously injured.
