Police Commissioner Danny Levy sent an urgent letter last week to Shin Bet head Ronen Bar, in which he expressed concern for the life of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, due to the extreme left-wing demonstrations near his residence in Jerusalem - and following the escalating incitement against him.
According to a report on Channel 14, the Commissioner claimed in his letter that there are notable gaps between the security of the Prime Minister's House and its surroundings in Jerusalem and the required security needs. Levy further notes that although several meetings were held between the police and the Shin Bet last year, nothing was done.
The Commissioner wrote, among other things, that in meetings and tours that took place in the past, the Shin Bet promised that physical measures would be updated, such as installing fences, gates, and various electronic means, but despite the passage of time, surprisingly, the Shin Bet did not act on the issue.
In his scathing letter to the head of the Shin Bet, Levy wrote: "There are notable gaps in the security of the Prime Minister's residence and its surroundings. Therefore, the police will not be able to guarantee that difficult events that occur there, as has happened recently, will not dangerously spill over into the Prime Minister's residence.".
He added: "It is not possible that in an unusual event at the site, police officers would receive phone calls about protesters entering the restricted area but not take the necessary steps.".
The Commissioner emphasizes in his letter to Barr: "Continued cooperation between the organizations is necessary in order to ensure our common goal - preserving the safety and security of the Prime Minister.".
The Shin Bet's response to the Commissioner's letter sent to Ronen Bar: "The Prime Minister's security is carried out to the highest standard, and with due regard to the various threats against him, with an emphasis on those emerging at this time.".
""There is a continuous and close dialogue between all the bodies responsible for the Prime Minister's security and the Prime Minister's Residence, within which the manner of implementing security arrangements and public order is also discussed, in accordance with the division of responsibility stipulated in the decision of the Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet Affairs.".
""The letter in question was sent to the office of the head of the Shin Bet several days ago, and an orderly response to its contents will be sent to the person requesting it and not through leaks to the media.".
