Justice Minister Yariv Levin decided to appoint Amir Ohana, the former Justice Minister who currently serves as Speaker of the Knesset, as the government's representative on the 'Grunis Committee', the committee that is supposed to discuss the dismissal of the legal advisor to the government.
The official decision is expected to be made in the coming days.
According to a report this evening (Sunday) by Avishai Greenzig, i24's legal commentator, the government tried to reach out to former justice ministers, but they all refused or are known to vote against the dismissal of Rabbi Meara.
That is why it was decided to appoint Ohana.
The decision, to say the least, is very legally complex in light of the fact that former Justice Minister Ohana is the chairman of the legislative branch and there is a problem of separation of powers in that he will serve as a government representative.
Another problem is that this is a politician serving in the ruling party.
The government representative, according to the Shamgar Committee report, is a former Minister of Justice or a former Legal Advisor to the Government. Since, as mentioned, there is no former Minister of Justice or former Attorney General who supports the move, Justice Minister Levin was forced to turn to Ohana.
Will the High Court invalidate the appointment? The government is aware of this option.
