Minister of Jerusalem and Jewish Tradition, Meir Porush, responded this evening (Tuesday) to a letter from the chairman of the national camp, MK Benny Gantz, who warned government ministers that amending the law on the committee for selecting judges would drag the people of Israel into civil war.
In response, Minister Porush warns in his own letter that the conduct of the legal system according to the regulation of the status of yeshiva students, and the Attorney General's persecution of Torah students, may, God forbid, lead to civil war.
Minister Porush wrote: "I am sorry that the phrase 'civil war' has become a buzzword so quickly among left-wing protesters in Israel, after the founder of the legal coup, Mr. Aharon Barak, introduced it into public discourse in recent days, and I am surprised that a person like you, who usually tries to be moderate and thoughtful and lead to reconciliation and calming down, chooses to use this harsh terminology.".
""But since this has already become a topic in Israeli discourse, I can only agree with you and warn you that the continuation of the current conduct of the legal system will, God forbid, lead to civil war.".
Minister Porush warns: "The serious conduct, which began with the High Court ruling to revoke the status of yeshiva students, and continues with the orchestrated attack by the Legal Advisor to the Government against Torah students, yeshiva graduates, and kollel abraki, may inevitably drag us into a war of one against another.".
""You are mistaken in thinking that about a million people in Israel, for whom studying Torah is dearest of all, will sit in equanimity in the face of the campaign waged by the Israeli legal system against the world of Torah, which spares no means and seeks to strip away, layer by layer, the rights of the families of the students, as if they were the last of the criminals in Israel.".
""My dear MK Gantz, we are all brothers here, even members of the Haredi community are brothers in the people of Israel, and you should know that you are obligated to act to prevent a civil war between those who will not allow them to be separated from the study of the Torah that is so dear to them and those who are struggling with the media.".
Porush added and noted that "Unfortunately, those who struggle with Torah scholars are inspired by the attorney general, who, with obsessiveness and exemplary agility, is very active in her suggestions on how to fine and harm Torah scholars, and this will inevitably lead to conflict.".
Minister Porush signed his letter to MK Gantz with the following words: "Remember, I warned.".
