
A series of shooting incidents in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia: A group of armed men opened fire on two synagogues, an Orthodox church, and a police checkpoint in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala in Dagestan, in the North Caucasus region of Russia.
The synagogue hall in Derbent was set on fire and the synagogue of the local Jewish community was completely burned down.
18 people were killed in the attack, including 15 police officers - two of whom were guarding the synagogue in Makhachkala. In Russia, it is reported that civilians held in the church in Devrent have been released.
The synagogue in the city of Makhachkala, the capital of the republic, was also set on fire, but local firefighters managed to bring the fire under control.
In the city of Makhachkala, gunmen fired at a police checkpoint and killed police officers.
In Russian documents, the synagogue in Derbent is seen in flames after being set on fire. The city has a small Jewish community of about a thousand people. It is not known whether Jews or Israelis were injured in the incident. The synagogue was empty of worshippers.

According to a Reuters report, during an exchange of fire that developed at the three locations, two terrorists were eliminated, the rest managed to escape and a pursuit is underway.
In Russia, it was reported that those responsible for the attack were an "international terrorist organization" and that the head of the Dagestan region was arrested after suspicions arose that three of the terrorists were members of his family, two of whom were his sons.
There was also shooting at the Pessau border crossing on the border between Russia and Abkhazia, and there are reports of casualties. Local security forces are investigating whether there is a connection between the shootings.
