The Likud Party responded this evening (Wednesday) to Minister Nir Barkat's announcement that he will not vote in favor of the conscription law in its current form.
""Nir Barkat is expected to address the cost of living and not look for excuses to overthrow a right-wing government during a war," the Likud response said.
Commentator Yaakov Bardugo said on the program with Doron Cohen on Gali Israel radio: "Allow me to chuckle at the failed minister Nir Barkat who threatens, 'I have informed the prime minister that I will oppose the conscription law' - because even the haredim know that the conscription law will not pass as it is.".
According to him, "The law that will be passed will be a different law that serious people are currently sitting on. Nir Barkat, don't threaten what you don't have! You take the emerging understandings and try to turn them into your personal success.".
Barkat informed the prime minister earlier today that he, along with a group of Likud MKs, will not support the conscription law without changes.
In a special announcement, the minister said: "I informed the Prime Minister after the technical vote on continuity - that I will oppose the conscription law as it stands in the next votes, along with other MKs from the Likud.
""To win the war, the IDF needs more soldiers. Without victory in battle, there is no state and no Torah. As an officer in the paratroopers who led fighters into battle at the risk of his life, I salute the IDF fighters and pledge to be worthy of their sacrifice and devotion.".
In a letter he sent to the Prime Minister, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, MK Yuli Edelstein, and the Chairman of the Coalition, MK Ofir Katz, Barkat detailed the "principles required to implement a proper conscription law, which will receive his support and that of the majority of the people in Israel.".
