The prosecution unit of the Hof District Police filed an indictment with the Hadera Magistrate's Court against eight cashiers, residents of the towns of Jisr a-Zarqa and Fordyce, who worked at a branch of the "Rami Levy" chain in Zikhron Yaakov. The Arab cashiers are accused of stealing over half a million shekels. According to the indictment, this involves about 70 cases of theft that spread over a few months. The cashiers used to distribute the products they stole to family members and close friends and also kept large quantities for themselves. The Mako website quoted a police officer as saying: "One of the cashiers sat at the checkout and made sure that people on her behalf would move carts full of food, the products in which were worth between several hundred and thousands of shekels. For each such cart, they paid only between 20 and 30 shekels." The method worked like this: The group member, who was serving as the cashier at the time, put the cash register into 'query' mode, so that a sound would be heard when a product was scanned with the barcode reader, but no charge was made at all - and the other group members would move carts full of products, paying for only a very small portion of the products. Only after those in charge noticed that there were significant gaps between expenses and income at this branch did they check the security cameras and discover the sophisticated method.
