After the increase in milk prices, another basic product is becoming more expensive: Starting tomorrow morning (Monday), a consumer increase of 4.9% in regulated bread prices will go into effect.
Following the move, the price of a single-grain sliced bread will be 8.30 shekels instead of 6.77 shekels today. The price of a single-grain bread will increase by 7.30 shekels compared to 5.95 shekels today. The price of sliced white bread will be 6.10 shekels instead of 5.21 shekels today.
The Ministry of Finance's price committee approved, without causing a stir, the bakeries' request to raise prices, even though Economy Minister Nir Barkat opposed the price increase and refused to sign the order.
Because of Minister Barkat's opposition, the Price Supervision Committee headed by the Minister of Finance activated Section 6 of the law to bypass the Minister of Economy.
Minister Barkat said in closed-door talks: "There is no justified reason to raise the price of bread, especially during a difficult economic period, when the weakest populations in the State of Israel will have to pay for a loaf of bread. I strongly oppose it and therefore I did not agree to sign the order. This is an outrageous decision.".
