The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court approved a settlement agreement in a civil proceeding, according to which an Arab who threw stones at a Jewish resident of the Beit Orot neighborhood in Jerusalem about two years ago, along with other rioters, an incident during which the Jew was injured, will pay the victim 10,000 shekels in compensation.
The settlement agreement was drawn up as part of a civil lawsuit filed by the Jew through attorney Ofir Steiner of Mhonanu.
Prior to this, the attacker was convicted, according to his confession, as part of a plea agreement, of the offenses of rioting and simple assault, together with a motive of racism or hostility towards the public.
The court sentenced the terrorist to 7 months in prison and probation. After his conviction, a civil lawsuit was filed in which he was personally sued to pay compensation to the victim of the crime.
In the lawsuit, Attorney Steiner describes the attack the Jew endured: "On July 5, 2021, several fireworks were fired at Beit Orot, which led to the burning of thorns. Several residents of Jewish appearance, including the plaintiff, went out to put out the fire. After it was extinguished, the residents remained near the entrance to the compound. At around 11:50 p.m., a disturbance began on the road on Shmuel Ben Adia Street, during which dozens of rioters threw dozens of stones at the residents and Beit Orot, from a distance of about 10-20 meters. The defendant took part in the riot and threw a stone at the residents and Beit Orot, from a distance of about 20 meters. A few minutes later, the defendant picked up a large stone, slammed it on the road to break it into small stones, picked up two fragments of stones the size of a palm and threw them from a distance of about 20 meters at the Jewish residents and Beit Orot, all out of a racist motive.".
Attorney Steiner details in the lawsuit what the Jew went through: "The plaintiff suffered pain and suffering during the violent incident that occurred, when dozens of stones were thrown at him, in a way that made him fear for the integrity of his body and even his life. These were long minutes of terror, during which the plaintiff even suffered an injury to his leg, which further intensified the sense of fear he felt. Indeed, the physical injury became real, and in those moments the plaintiff did not know in what physical condition he would be able to survive the incident, if at all.".
Attorney Ofir Steiner welcomed the ruling and said: "There is great importance in directly prosecuting those who attack Jews out of hostility or terror. In addition to serving their sentence, they are forced to reach into their pockets and pay for the harm they caused. In this way, financial compensation is added to the punishment on the criminal level and strengthens deterrence.".
