Murder in a synagogue: Rescue forces were called this morning (Sunday) to a fight at the Shalom Rav-Makrov synagogue on Bar Yochai Street in Safed. This was after a 40-year-old homeless Haredi man was stabbed by a man wearing a kippah.
Rescue teams attempted to perform CPR, but after many minutes they were forced to declare the stabbed man dead.
According to testimonies, the murderer - an American resident, a homeless painter living in a tent - stabbed the deceased seven times with a knife without anyone being able to stop him. "There were several worshipers who tried to stop him from continuing the madness, but then he stabbed another worshiper who intervened," says Elimelech Gerstel, a resident of the city.
The second injured man, aged 45, was slightly injured, was located on nearby Hari Street, and was taken to Ziv Hospital.
""When we arrived at the scene, we found a slightly injured man stabbed in the lower body on Ari Street," says MDA paramedic Eran Yatach. "The MDA unit that was near the incident provided him with initial medical treatment and he was later evacuated to a hospital in an MDA ambulance. On a nearby street, we provided medical treatment and evacuated a 40-year-old man to Ziv, who was stabbed in the upper body in critical condition, while performing CPR. The doctors in the trauma room continued CPR, but his injuries were very serious and they were forced to declare him dead.".
The fight broke out after a verbal argument between the beggar and the attacker during prayer at the synagogue.
Police forces called to the scene pursued the stabbing suspect - and he was captured. According to residents of Safed, he had recently gotten into fights with quite a few people. "The killer is a freak who constantly walks with a bag on his head, and hangs out between synagogues," says a resident of the city.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
