Firefighters from the Binyamin Regional Station were dispatched today (Saturday) late afternoon to a fire that broke out in an apartment on Meromi Sadeh Street in the Haredi city of Modiin Illit.
Lahav Muni Ben Zion, deputy shift commander: "In the afternoon we received a report of a fire in an apartment in Modiin Illit. Many teams from the Binyamin regional station were dispatched to the scene, as well as assistance from a high-altitude crane from the Ayalon station.
""Even before arriving at the scene of the fire, black smoke could be seen rising above the building. Upon arrival, we detected a definite fire in an apartment on the fourth floor, and a lot of smoke throughout the building.".
""We immediately began firefighting operations inside and outside the building, in parallel with operations to rescue those trapped from the apartments and balconies in the building, as well as with the assistance of the crane.".
""A total of 13 trapped people were rescued during the fire, one of whom was taken to the hospital in mild condition as a result of smoke inhalation.".
Sergeant Ido Peretz, commander of the Binyamin regional station: "This fire ended without casualties, but it could have ended differently. I call on the entire public: Install a smoke detector! Installing a smoke detector is of great importance. The smoke detector warns of the outbreak of a fire and allows us to escape from the apartment and save those dear to us.".
