Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman does not believe that elections should be held now, according to an interview conducted with him on CNN.
During the interview, Lieberman made it clear that he opposes the prime minister's moves, and that he believes that a different path should have been taken towards Hamas, but that he supports the government's continued existence: "We have a government and I am in the minority. I support the government. I don't think this is the time for new elections. I support overthrowing Hamas and bringing more moderate people into the Palestinian government.".
Regarding the Prime Minister's call for Abbas to return to the negotiating table, Lieberman said that he does not believe that Abbas is the man to talk to: "How can he accuse Israel of war crimes and want to continue negotiations?""
Lieberman emphasized that he did not support the occupation of Gaza, but only the overthrow of Hamas and the establishment of a more moderate government. He made it clear that unilateral steps like those planned by Abbas - an appeal to the UN that would force Israel to withdraw - would not lead to a peace agreement.
""I feel sorry for all those accusations by Abu Mazen. I don't understand how a person who wants to reach an agreement accuses us of such things and takes unilateral steps. We want to find a real partner.".
