At the initiative of Mayor Moshe Leon, a fourth library for the ultra-Orthodox sector was inaugurated this week in two years.
The library that was inaugurated is a mobile library, which will serve all residents of the city's ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, and in particular the residents of the mixed neighborhoods, who will be able to enjoy the library services that will come to their homes, on days and times that will be announced in advance.
The original idea of the mobile library gained momentum at the beginning of the term of Mayor Moshe Leon, who sought to encourage reading among children and youth.
Along with improving the service of the library department in the municipality, as well as increasing the municipal purchase of books, the mayor also ordered the establishment of mobile libraries that will serve the residents of the Haredi neighborhoods, and in particular the mixed neighborhoods where libraries designated for the Haredi sector have not yet been established.
Those leading the initiative on the ground are the Director of the Cultural Department, Rabbi Pinchas Erlich, and the Director of the Libraries Department, Rabbi David Weiner, who work under the Head of the Cultural Department, Ariella Rajwan, who is leading the cultural revolution for the Haredi sector.
All books in the mobile library, like in other Haredi libraries, are adapted for the Haredi sector, and are under the close supervision of the city's rabbis and educators.
Mayor Moshe Leon: "My greatest pleasure is entering an existing or mobile library and seeing the children of Jerusalem, famous for their cleverness, reading eagerly, or choosing a good book to take home. There is nothing like reading quality books to sharpen the mind and encourage intellectual and emotional intelligence. We will continue to encourage reading and improve library service to the Haredi sector, with close support from the city's rabbis and educational personnel.".
The Minister of Torah Culture, Rabbi David Blumenstock, thanked the mayor for the special emphasis he placed on operating and establishing the libraries and said: "The mobile library is further evidence of the revolution that the mayor is leading in the Haredi sector in Jerusalem. All the needs of the Haredi public are and will be met. From basic needs such as housing, infrastructure and religious buildings, to cultural needs such as reading and designated events.".
