The Stroller Protest: Dozens of ultra-Orthodox mothers arrived this evening (Wednesday) with toddlers to a Jerusalem City Council meeting, protesting the failure to open a daycare center in the Kiryat Yuval neighborhood.

This is a daycare center that is not under the responsibility of the municipality in the Kiryat Yuval neighborhood, for which the Jerusalem Municipality refuses to grant an exceptional use permit, and for this reason it has not yet opened.

In response, dozens of mothers came to the council meeting that was held this evening, along with babies and strollers - and expressed their protest.

Senior officials from the ultra-Orthodox factions in the Jerusalem Municipality told Haredim10 that they have been fighting for approval for the Haredi daycare in the mixed neighborhood for a long time - and after seeing that their words were falling on deaf ears, they decided to summon the women to a council meeting, in order to show Mayor Nir Barkat the dire plight of the Haredi residents of the neighborhood.

The same sources added that they are continuing their efforts to reach an agreed-upon solution, and that feverish discussions are underway between the mayor and the ultra-Orthodox council members.

Council member Yitzhak Pindros (United Torah Judaism) spoke at the meeting and said that there are hundreds of Haredi students in Jerusalem who study in places that are not standard.
