Maj. Avi Desta, the team commander, said: "A report was received by the Judea and Samaria Regional Command about a fire in a synagogue in Mitzpe Ziv. Upon arriving at the scene, we identified a stone building whose entire contents had caught fire. "We also found many tires at the scene, which were apparently thrown inside in order to create a strong fire in the building. The holy books and siddurs that were there were damaged by the fire. The Ark of the Covenant that was there was also burned, but fortunately there was no Torah scroll inside." The fire department notes that firefighters from the Yehuda Regional Station had previously worked at the scene of a fire, which at the end of the investigation was found to be intentional arson. A fire investigator from the Israel Fire and Rescue Department began investigating the incident, along with investigators from the Israel Police's Shechem District. Mitzpe Ziv is an observation point and a memorial in memory of two Israeli security guards - Yehuda Ben Yosef and Yoav Doron, who were killed in 2003 after being mistakenly identified as terrorists.
