""If Iran breaks out into a bomb tomorrow, Israel will act." This was warned yesterday (Saturday) by Major General Eyal Zamir - who until recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff.

Speaking at an IAC conference in Miami, Zamir said that Israel should be concerned about the talks taking place in Vienna between Iran and the powers. "The Iranians cannot be trusted," he clarified. "Iran will only be stopped if it is faced with a clear threat that will deter it. We would prefer the US to lead this threat, which must have two components: willingness and capability. "Willingness alone is not enough, and capability alone is not enough. The US has both, but if it does not act - Israel will be required to act. If Iran decides to break out into a bomb tomorrow, Israel will act. I know the plans. We have the capability to do so." Zamir, who served as deputy chief of staff until last summer, is currently spending a year studying in Washington awaiting a decision on who will serve as the next IDF chief of staff, after Aviv Kochavi. In the conversation, he added that Israel is operating in Syria much more than is known, with the aim of stopping the Iranians' expansionist ambitions in the region. "Iran wanted to establish a Hezbollah-like army in Syria as well. We prevented this," he said. Referring to Gaza, Zamir, who previously served as the Southern Command's major general, said: "It's only a matter of time until the next round of fighting in the Strip." He said that the IDF is preparing for this, including for the possibility that an extensive ground operation in Gaza will be required.
