In recent days, there has been public criticism of Defense Minister Benny Gantz's decision to bring the appointment for government approval, contrary to the committee's position.
At the government meeting, Gantz tried to shake off the label attached to the appointment, as if it was unworthy: "I am not sitting in this chair (pointing to the prime minister's chair) because I defended the gatekeepers.".
Justice Minister Gideon Sa'ar sneered: "You're not sitting in this chair because you made a deal with Bibi...""
Finance Minister Lieberman supported the appointment and suggested that the Gilor Committee resign in light of its opposition to the appointment of Amir Peretz. "Does it make sense for the committee to issue a letter of response to the Minister of Defense? Where would we hear such a thing? If they claim that the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Finance have impaired judgment - let's turn off the light. They cannot act against the law. They cannot make people who have retired from politics ineligible to marry.".
Transportation Minister and former member of Peretz's party, Merav Michaeli, abstained from voting to approve his appointment: "There is no dispute that Peretz has relevant qualifications for the position, but the committee's decision also shows the very strong political connection to the defense minister who is responsible for the company.".
