The police today (Tuesday) uncovered an underground tunnel, which was used as a hydro laboratory, in the Rishon LeZion area.
In the tunnel, which was about a dunam in size, thousands of seedlings suspected of being drugs were grown - goods estimated to be worth about 15 million shekels.
The laboratory was uncovered at the end of an undercover investigation conducted by the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Police Department over several months - at the end, seven residents of the center, all in their 30s, were arrested on suspicion of growing and producing hundreds of drug seedlings in a laboratory, underground, in the city of Rishon LeZion.
Deputy Chief Yaniv Wolowitz described the lab as "one of the largest and most unique ever seized in the country." He said, "The uniqueness of the lab is that it is an open area, seemingly located in an innocent place.".
He added: "We have no doubt that these are criminal organizations that are behind the scenes. The seizure prevented a very large distribution of drugs that were supposed to reach the streets.".
Along with the 7 suspects, a large amount of equipment used for growing and manufacturing drugs was seized.
Tomorrow, the Tel Aviv Police Department will request an extension of the detention of the seven suspects, in accordance with the needs of the investigation and its findings.
