Holding the cover of Haaretz newspaper in his hand, MK Shimon Ohayon of Yisrael Beiteinu says, with undisguised pride, that he has canceled his subscription to Haaretz newspaper.
The MK made the subscription because of educational issues, which he deals with extensively in his role. But the attitude of Haaretz reporters towards the State of Israel, as reflected in the newspaper during the last war, made him shudder.
And what was the straw that broke the MK's back?
He shows me the cover of the newspaper, which shows members of a Palestinian family from Gaza posing in misery, "on the packages" and in the rubble. That was the red line for him, he says.
In recent weeks, there has been a controversy over how many subscribers Haaretz newspaper has lost, due to the article published by journalist Gideon Levy, "The Evil Ones to Fly," and due to the newspaper's coverage of Operation Protective Edge.
While the newspaper's publisher, Amos Schocken, claims that "Haaretz is at an all-time high in subscriptions" and that the newspaper has not been harmed, some have claimed that the newspaper has lost thousands of readers.
