An Iranian Jew has been sentenced to ten years in prison in the capital Tehran for visiting Israel, the Jerusalem Post newspaper reveals.
The Jew was met by a graduate student at Princeton University who was arrested under various pretexts by the Iranian regime and held in detention between 2016 and 2019.
The student, who has since become a researcher specializing in Iran, said: "The Jew I met managed to reach Israel and lived there for a while, but asked to return to Iran. When he returned to the country, he was arrested and put on trial.
""He didn't tell me much about himself. The Iranian government often turns a blind eye to Iranian Jews leaving for Israel, so this case was unusual in my opinion.".
The prisoner, whose name was not published, is not the only one: in December, the regime released Mashallah Fazar Cohen, a Jew who had been detained for about four years, after he visited Israel.
The researcher said he encountered another prisoner, Muhammad Haidari Khakhash, who was imprisoned for three years for wanting to participate in a sports competition in Israel. He submitted a formal request to the authorities and was not only rejected but also arrested and put on trial.
