Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit ruled today (Tuesday) that Defense Minister Benny Gantz is not authorized to decide to close Galei Tzahal during the election period.
In his opinion, the conclusions of the examination of the future of the military station will not be binding on the next Minister of Defense.
In a letter sent by Deputy Attorney General Meir Levin to MK Nissim Vaturi of the Likud, it was clarified that Gantz - like every other minister in the government - is obligated to exercise restraint during the election period, and is therefore not authorized to make a decision of this type at this time.
The Defense Minister's Office responded: "As the Defense Minister emphasized in his announcement, he decided, on the recommendation of the Chief of Staff, to remove the IDF from the defense establishment. The committee that was established after consultation with the legal authorities will present within a few weeks the action plan for implementing the decision.".
""The Minister of Defense does not believe that there will be anyone who would want to overturn it at the last minute, and if, God forbid, this happens, my father will bear the public and practical consequences," the bureau said.
About three weeks ago, Gantz announced that he had decided to initiate a move aimed at removing Galei Tzahal from the defense establishment.
