The Shas faction responded this afternoon (Monday) to the Blue and White party's intention to bring the 'Basic Equality Law' up for a vote in the Knesset plenum on Wednesday.
""Minister Benny Gantz and Blue and White decided to dissolve the government and go to elections. The attempt to promote bills intended to increase disputes and provoke division, in parallel with the dissolution of the Knesset, is intended solely to garner votes and conveys severe political distress," said Shas' response.
As reported earlier in Haredim 10, the Blue and White faction will advance a significant series of laws this week - the Basic Law of Equality, which aims to enshrine in a Basic Law the prohibition of discrimination of any kind, the Surrogacy Law, and the Basic Law of the Declaration of Independence.
This is a series of laws that are considered a 'red sheet' for the Haredi parties, because they could lead to the High Court's recognition of civil marriage and increase the recognition of LGBT rights.
In addition, the right-wing fears that the Basic Equality Law will increase the judicial activism of the High Court of Justice, allowing judges to expand the cases in which Knesset legislation will be invalidated.
Blue and White Chairman, MK Benny Gantz, instructed faction chairman MK Eitan Ginsburg to promote these bills this week.
According to Gantz's decision, three bills will be promoted, with the intention of completing the legislative process already in the current Knesset.
