Haredim rejoice: Zero VAT law did not pass • Asher: "Successful interception""

The enactment of the zero-rate VAT law in the second and third readings will not take place until the Knesset goes into summer recess today (Wednesday) night, after the opposition's fight in the Finance Committee was successful. Last night, it was decided not to convene the Finance Committee in order to continue discussions on the law, and the committee will only convene at noon. הנציגות החרדית חוגגת את ההישג ומגדירה אותו "ענק". חבר ועדת הכספים ח"כ יעקב ליצמן אמר: "הוכחנו אחדות, עקשנות ונצחון. ניצחנו את בריונות הממשלה, בראשות לפיד וסלומיאנסקי. הוכחנו אחדות במאבק חסר פשרות, ואחריות של האופוזיציה לאורך כל הדרך". ח"כ יעקב אשר אמר: "התעקשותו של לפיד להפלות את החרדים בחוק המע"מ שעליו שם את כל כובד משקלו, פגעה ביוקרתו ובמעמדו הפוליטי פגיעה קשה שלא במהרה יתאושש ממנה. זה בהחלט היה יירוט מוצלח!" וח"כ אורי מקלב אמר: "חוק פופליסטי שלא רק שלא היה עוזר מהומה במשבר הדיור, אלא היה גורם לגירעונות. כוחו של לפיד נחלש  - ומגמה זו תמשיך ותתגבר". ההעברת החוק נכשלה לאחר שהח"כים החרדים הודיעו כי לא יסכימו להסיר את 2,000 ההסתייגויות שהגישו. גם מפלגת העבודה לחמה בחוק בוועדת הכספים. בעקבות כך הודיעו ב"יש עתיד": "יאיר לפיד שר האוצר ימשיך להלחם למען הזוגות הצעירים ונגד הפחדנות והסחטנות והעליבות של מפלגת העבודה והחרדיות שחברו יחד למנוע מזוגות צעירים לממש דירה. לפיד נחוש להמשיך ולהעביר את החוק גם אם זה יקרה במושב הבא". עוד אמרו ביש עתיד, כי אם החוק לא יתקבל במושב הנוכחי, הוא יחוקק בהמשך עם הוראה רטרואקטיבית מה-1 בספטמבר 2014. יחד עם זאת חשוב לציין, כי ניתן לחוקק את החוק בקריאה השנייה והשלישית במהלך פגרת הקיץ, במידה ויתקיים כנס מיוחד של מליאת הכנסת.

It was already clear yesterday afternoon that the chances of the law being approved in the summer session were low, and that it would be postponed to the winter session in October. Indeed, in the afternoon, the committee dispersed as it had come – without making any progress on any of the bill's 38 articles.

Those who 'contributed' greatly to the chaos in the committee were the MKs of 'United Torah Judaism', who all formed one group and arrived together (all six) at the meeting, even though only MK Yaakov Litzman was a member of it, and managed to tire the members with more and more statements and reservations about every line and a half.

When he left the debate, MK Yisrael Eichler was quick to declare: "Lapid and his partners must not be allowed to continue digging tunnels aimed at crushing Haredi Judaism with economic weapons. They are extorting taxes from the Haredi public and with this money they are depriving young couples of a roof over their heads. As the saying goes, 'They will divide their clothes among themselves and cast lots for my clothing.'".
