First Israeli killed in Operation Protective Edge: Dror Hanin, 37, from the Beit Aryeh settlement, was killed on Tuesday evening after being hit by shrapnel from a mortar shell fired from the northern Gaza Strip towards Israel.
Hanin, who had come to distribute food to soldiers, was shot in the chest near the Erez checkpoint. The MDA team provided him with first aid, including CPR, but unfortunately he was pronounced dead at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
Hanin and his friend arrived in the south to encourage the soldiers on the border and distribute food to them. There is no red alert at the Erez checkpoint, following a mortar shell fire. Hanin's friend, the security guard from Beit Aryeh, was slightly injured by shrapnel.
Nachum Strasberg, director of the Chabad house in the Beit Aryeh settlement, told the Walla website that Dror had a special volunteer spirit.

Khanin left behind a wife and three children, ages 10, 6, and a baby less than a year old. Khanin is the first Israeli casualty since Operation Protective Edge began eight days ago.
