Ashkelon police officers are embarking on a large-scale operation this week to enforce ATV riders who commit life-threatening offenses: As a first step, hidden observation posts were set up in areas frequented by ATV riders; Barnea and the northern part of the city. The observation posts, which were set up in advance, identified ATV riders committing driving offenses, dangerous driving, and driving without the required protective equipment.
Immediately after the riders were recorded, police went to their homes and carried out enforcement actions against them. During the activity, a minor resident of the city, about 17 years old, was arrested after being identified as driving an ATV without a driver's license and driving dangerously. After being questioned, the boy was sent to detention.
Later, another minor, an 18-year-old resident of the city, was arrested and imprisoned on suspicion that he was also driving a quad bike without a driver's license and endangering human life. The quad bike was confiscated by the police. A third minor was arrested at his home and imprisoned after he was previously identified as committing serious driving offenses and endangering passersby and other drivers. In this case, the rider's driver's license was revoked, and the quad bike was taken and confiscated - for a period of 30 days.
Another suspect, a 28-year-old city resident, was arrested after being caught driving while intoxicated and disqualified.
Ashkelon Police Commander, Lt. Col. Shimon Portal: "The phenomenon of ATV rampage is expanding as we approach the summer season. Aggressive enforcement against riders who endanger lives will continue with greater intensity in order to reduce the phenomenon as much as possible. The treatment is unequivocal, uncompromising and includes the exercise of powers of denial, delay and arrest, and of course the confiscation of the ATVs.".
