The Israel Prison Service and Shin Bet investigators have been investigating in recent hours (Thursday) whether terrorists held in one of Israel's most secure prisons – Shata Prison – attempted to organize an escape by digging a tunnel under the facility.
Following intelligence information about an intention to harm prison staff, a search was conducted in the prison wings and a spike and improvised IPS uniforms were found in the possession of one of the prisoners. As a result, the search was expanded and the tunnel was discovered.
Shata Prison, located next to Gilboa Prison, is considered the most secure in the country. The facility houses security prisoners and it is suspected that they attempted to escape from the prison through a tunnel, which is about half a meter in diameter and about four meters deep. It was also suspected that the tunnel was intended to hide various means prohibited inside the prison.
The prison was immediately put on alert, and the prisoners were counted. Fighters from the Nachshon Unit of the Israeli Prison Service were called to the prison and evacuated all the hundreds of prisoners to various prisons across the country.
According to the initial examination conducted, this is a fresh excavation from the last few days. It also appears that the excavation did not reach its conclusion and led to the wing's yard. In another cell in the same wing, a Fatah prisoner was found with an improvised spike, as well as civilian clothes that had been "converted" into a prison guard's uniform. These are blue shirts with IPS symbols cut from pieces of cardboard and painted on with toothpaste. The wing is being evacuated to its occupants to complete the examinations and examine the connection between the findings.
